The 70-something “depressed and despondent” man was found in Fair Lawn after a four-hour late-night search, Police Chief Dean Ackermann said Monday.

He was taken to New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus for a psychiatric evaluation, the chief said.

“A handgun owned by the man was located by Pennsylvania State Police and was voluntarily surrendered to them by a family member,” Ackermann said, adding that the man didn’t have immediate access to the weapon.

Borough patrols and detectives worked in cooperation with New Jersey State Police, Pennsylvania State Police, Fair Lawn police and security at Fairleigh Dickinson University to locate the who’d been spotted in the borough’s business district, the chief said.

“Concerned citizens felt that the man may have posed a threat to himself or others,” Ackerman said.

Detective Sgt. James Calaski conferred with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and determined that “there were no direct threats directed towards a specific individual or institution,” the chief said.

“This was found to be strictly a mental health issue and no criminal charges will be filed at this time,” he said. “All appropriate notifications, as required by state law, were made.”
